Description

The last rays of sun touch aptly-named Red Hill as the desert around it sinks into shadow. When we arrived at Red Hill Trailhead, tucked away at the far end of Painted Hills Unit of John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, the sun was moving out of the scene very quickly. I raced down the trail to the main viewpoint and got this picture with the hill beautifully illuminated and the really nice cloudscape behind it. In that moment the hill seemed to glow. The light was gone two minutes after taking this picture and the whole look of the scene shifted. This is one of those “right place right time” moments in nature that I’m overjoyed I was able to capture.
